All Important Information About The American Bobtail Cat Breeds

Though they might have a bit of a wild evolution, American Bobtail is a domestic cat breed. For their friendly manner, this is a good cat for any family, whether the family environment is noisy with many members and other pets. It is an uncommon cat breed. They are famous for their short tail. They are not related to “Japanese Bobtail” cat. American Bobtails are a very strong breed. They are both short and long-haired coats. They are very affectionate, playful and energetic. If you find a dog like a cat then the American Bobtail is a perfect cat for you.

History

American Bobtail developed from the domestic tabby cat and a wild bobcat. Their exceptional tail is the result of genetic mutations within the domestic cat and to the Manxgene.

In the year 1989, TICA (The International Cat Association) accept this cat as a new breed. American Cat Fanciers Association and Cat Fanciers Association confess this cat for championship competition.

Appearance

They have a short tail with a strong body. It is moderately long with a rectangular shape. Its chest is wide. Its hind legs are longer than forelegs with large round feet. The head is large in size proportionate to its body. The ears are medium sized and the eyes are an almond shape. There is variation in eye color. Its tail is straight or curved.

Coat Color

American Bobtails body cover with woolly hair. Their hair is generally in short and medium-long lengths. Their coat comes in all colors and patterns. You can find brown, black, chocolate, blue, cinnamon, lilac, red and cream color American Bobtail. Sometimes the coat color is very soft and dilute.

Size

American Bobtail is a muscular cat. Typically weight of they are about (8 to 13) pounds. On average males weigh in between twelve to sixteen (12-16 ) lbs and females weigh in between seven to eleven (7-11 )lbs.

Personality

Some American Bobtails are very playful and some are very serious. They are very energetic, intelligent, active and cleaver. They are very social with their owners and easily adjust to the new environment. They prefer to pass his time with a family member. Their energy level is extremely high which are a bit more than the owner can handle. They love to play. Puzzle toys and fetch is their favorite game. They have the ability to learn tricks. After training, they nicely walk on a leash.

American Bobtail loves the attention of others. There is no guarantee of how they will behave with people. It depends on their past experience. But they are a kit friendly cat. Some American Bobtail accepts easily the other pets at the home. They are good travelers. This smart cat communicates with a family member with a standard meow.

Children And Other Pets

American Bobtail has a great attraction towards the children. This playful cat loves to play with children and prefer the children company. They are also very adjustable with other cats and cat-friendly dog. They enjoy the company of other pets. This cat never feels bored or uncomfortable with dogs.

Health

In a word, it is a very healthy cat breed. Health problem is very rare in American Bobtail. Like other cat breeds, they have also some genetical or health problems. Their health problem is genetical in nature. If any breeder claims that his cat has no genetic problems that claims is not properly true. Obesity is one of the common health problems of this breed. Always beware for this disease and take necessary steps against this.

Care

Proper care is necessary for American Bobtail. Its teeth should be kept clean for preventing disease. Weekly brushing is a better choice for their teeth. Cut their nails every couple of weeks.

Their eyes and ears should be kept clean. Corner of the eye should be wiped with a soft and damp cloth. Bath is not very necessary for them. Brush their coat a few times a week.

Frequently clean their litter box. To keep them free from other diseases it is a good idea to keep them indoors. When travel, be aware of using a safe and proper carrier to keep them safe.
