The name Ragdoll comes from the tendency of individuals from the original breeding stock to go tippy and calm down when picked up. Ragdoll is popular in both the United Kingdom and it’s native United State. It is often known as “dog-like cats” or “puppy-like cats”.Such name is given due to its behavior. It is known all over because of it’s restful and affectionate nature.
In 1960 a cat called Josephine produced several little kittens of typical type. Josephine was a regular non-pedigreed white domestic long haired cat. Josephine latter produced some kittens with a clam temperament and affectionate nature.The kittens had a tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up. Subsequent kitten produced litter with same nature. Then Ann Baker,a cat breeder purchased several kittens from the owner.She wanted to create something special what is now known as ”Ragdoll” It was breed over many years with many types of cats.
Ragdoll is one of the largest cat breeds.It has a strong body, large frame,equable legs. It is a cat breed with blue eyes and distinct color point coat. It is a large and muscular semi-long hair cat with a soft and silky coat.

Ragdoll is basically in six different colors: red, seal, chocolate and the corresponding ”dilutes” including blue, lilac and cream. Traditional ”Ragdoll” kittens are born mainly white. They obtain good color at 8-10 weeks. They obtain full color and coat at 3-4 years.
Different color patterns are–
Bi-color: Leg and abdomen is white, V-shaped white spot on the face. Sometimes the white spot is on the back.
Pointed: One color becomes dark at nose, ears, tail, and paws.
Mitted: Paw and abdomen are white. Sometimes white spot on the face. Sometimes white stripe runs from the chin to the genitals.
An ideal Ragdoll is a well-balanced cat. Male cats are larger and generally, weight is 15-20 pounds. Female cats are smaller than male and weight is about 10-15 pounds at maturity. Ragdolls are basically slow maturing cat.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is common heart disease. It occurs due to the increase of heart wall. It makes the heart pump less efficiently and causes sudden death. In Ragdoll, most of the cats die by this disease at the age of 3.

In 2007 a DNA test was developed which identify the gene that causes HCM. Ragdoll which is breed from the parent which is free from this gene will not develop the form of HCM associated with it.
A study shows that this cat has the lowest survival rate with 63% living. They generally live 10 years or more. Another study shows that a high number of Ragdoll Cat die of urinary problems mainly from kidney ureter issues. Some Ragdoll cat also die from lower urinary issues
Ragdoll cats are very interested in humans. They welcome people at the door. They follow people from room to room. Many Ragdolls come when they are called. They like to play with family members. They are very friendly with children and other pets. They are very respectful and play without extending their claws.
