We generally know about the common cat breeds like Bengal, Persian, Maine Coon, American Shorthair etc. But there are also some comparatively new and rare cat breed like Peterbald, Chartreux, Kurilian Bobtail etc. Here we list out the top 9 rare cat breed. Peterbald is comparatively new and rare cat breed which may be totally hairless or may have a coat which feels and looks like peach. They are medium in size and their body shape is similar to the oriental short hair. Male cats are  typically weigh between 8 to 10 lbs and female cats are  typically weigh between 6 to 8 lbs. In 1997, TICA— The International Cat Association  recognized this breed. They are highly  intelligent, affectionate, athletic, active, friendly and curious. This social cat easily make friendship with their owner and love to follow them around the house. They are also very friendly with the children.

This breed has basically five main coat type:

  • Bald (born fully without hair)
  • Velour (70% hairless and coat up to 1 mm in length)
  • Brush Coat (short coat with wiry hair up to 5 mm long)
  • Flock ( 90% hairless and feel like a smooth chamois leather )
  • Straight Coat (have a short coat with normal mustaches).

Kurilian Bobtail

The Kurilian Bobtail is a medium to large cat with a wild appearance. In spite of having a wild look they are very gentle. Kurilian Bobtails are originating from the Kuril Islands. They have  strong body and well-balanced character. Male cats are weigh between 9 to 15 lbs and female cats are weigh between 8 to 14 lbs.

Though they are popular in Russia and some parts of Europe, but remain rare cat breed in North America. TICA ( The International Cat Association ) recognized this breed as a pair related short and semi-long-haired cat. But CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) does not accept this cat as a breed.

They are independent, highly intelligent, clever, curious, friendly, playful, trainable and very gentle. Kurilian Bobtail is very friendly with their owner, children and other pets. They have excellent hunting and jumping ability. One of the most interesting fact about Kurilian Bobtail is they love to play in water.

Serengeti

The Serengeti is comparatively new and rare cat breed. You can find this cat very rarely in the United Kingdom. An American cat breeder named Karen Sausman created this breed in 1994. Serengeti is the result of crossing between an oriental Short hair and the Bengal cat. Serengeti is a short-haired, medium-sized, strong and muscular cat who has a pretty physical condition. One of their main identification is large and almost round ears which is equal to the head length. They have beautiful shiny round eyes.

(TICA)–The International Cat Association officially accepted this breed in 2002 but (GCCF)–Governing Council of the Cat Fancy did not recognise them.

Serengeti is very friendly, confident, gentle and active cat. This energetic cat love to climb and play with different types of toys. You often find them at the high places and running speedily through the house. They are very adjustable with family members and other pets. They have a sweet voice which is not so loud and like to talk with family members at any subject. In spite of having a high energy level they love to stay inside the home.

Ojos Azules

In Spanish, the Ojos Azules means “blue eyes”.  The first Ojos Azules cat was discovered in New Mexico in 1984. The first identified Ojos Azules was a female whose name was Cornflower, she identified in a feral locality. (TICA)–The International Cat Association officially accepted Ojus Azules registration in 1991. This is a very rare cat breed, as an example for their rarity, in 1992 there were only ten known Ojus Azules cat.

This is a medium-sized cat with a medium triangular head shape. Deep blue eyes are their main feature though their standard is still developing.  They have a beautifully short-haired coat which is very soft and silky. Their coat comes in variety of colours and patterns including patches of white, black, blue, bronze.

Because of their rarity, we are not able to collect a lot of information about their personality. But they are well-known for their active, friendly and affectionate behavior.

Ojos Azules loves human company and likes to play with different toys. This is a sociable cat who is very adjustable with kids and other pets including cats friendly dogs. They are very active, curious and love to jump and climb. You often find them rest on your bed and sofa.

Sokoke

Sokoke cat breed is a new and rare cat breed. They originate from the Sokoke district. In 1978, Jeni Slater a horse breeder and wildlife artist discovered this breed from the West. The International Cat Association ( TICA ), Canadian Cat Association (CCA) and The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) give them the official standard or accepted Sokoke.

Sokoke Is a medium-sized cat. Higher rear legs, muscular body, almond-shaped eyes, medium-sized ears, small head and long pointed tail is their main feature. Their weigh is between 6 to 10 lbs. They have short-haired coat but rarely you will find long-haired kitten.

Although Sokoke cats originate from the wild cat but they are very social cat. They are very active and playful cat. They like to play with human and other pets. Sokoke communicate with human through a sweet voice.

Sphynx

Though Sphynx is well-known as a hairless cat breed but they are not truly hairless. Sphynx began to develop in the 1960s. This breed is not very popular. Their cost is one of the major reason of their rarity. Their Average Price is between $600 to $3,000. Medium-sized body, satellite-dish ears, lemon-shaped eyes, hairless coat and wrinkled face is their main identification. They come in many colors and pattern. Many colors like point, solid, tabby, van, tortie etc may be seen on their skin. Male Sphynx is larger than female and their weigh is between 6-12 pounds. Having no hair they lose more body heat than other cats. They need extra care.  They are basically an indoor cat breed because they feel too much cold in winter and high risk of sunburn in summer.

Sphynx is a social cat who loves to pass time with family members. They always follow his human and do anything for making love. They are very energetic cat who loves to play with children and other pets; climbs and runs through the house. Sphynx is very curious and intelligent cat. Having curious nature sometimes they meet the strangers.

Napoleon or Minuets

The Napoleon is the crossing result of two existing domestic cat breeds the Persians with the Munchkins. A Bassed Hound breeder named Joseph Smith created this breed. The another name of Napoleon Cat is ‘Minuet Cat’. Napoleon cat is comparatively new and rare breed of cats. This cat comes in both short-haired and long-haired coat. Baby doll face, short legs and a fluffy tail is their key feature.

(TICA)–The International Cat Association recognized this breed as a domestic hybrid cat. American Cat Fanciers Association and Cat Fancier’s Association also recognized this breed.

One of the interesting things about this breed is” in January 2015, ‘Napoleon ” name was changed to ‘Minuet’, on the base of TICA’s board of directors vote.” But this breed is still known as ‘Napoleon’ through (CFF)–The Cat Fanciers Federation.

Napoleon is sweet, social and docile nature cat. They are very adjustable with family members and other pets. They have no aggressiveness and prefer to stay with his owner throughout his life. This intelligent cat greets the family members at door and always try to pass his time with people. They will never disturb you through interfering your work. They love people attention but never demands for extra attention. Their sweet quite voice and pretty expression impressed you easily.

Minskin

The Minskin is a rare cat breed. In 1998, A Boston breeder, Paul McSorley began to be developed this breed by crossing  the Munchkin with the Sphynx. Finally, in 2000 he produced the Minskin cat. In 2008, (TICA) –The International Cat Association gave this cat the breed status.

Minskin is a small cat with short-legged and a tail that is longer than the body. Large sized eyes and pretty kitten like face make them more glamorous. Their heights in between (7-8) inches and weighs in between  (4-8) lbs. They come in all colors and patterns including tabby patterns, tortoise shells and solids. Minskin is basically a hairless cat. As most of the Minskin is hairless, when you touch their body you feel warm. Having hairless coat they need a lot of care.

Minskin is a curious, active, affectionate, playful, intelligent and loyal cat. They love people company and never have any objection to stay with other pets and cat friendly dogs. They love to play with children and other pets. Owners of a Minskin cat never have any objection in their behavior.

Chartreux

The Chartreux is basically a rare cat breed who comes from French. Though they made their debut into cat community in 1931 and first imported to the UK in 1970. Apparently they are too much similar to the Russian Blue and  British Shorthair cat. In 1987 (CFA)– The Cat Fanciers’ Association recognized this breed. They also accepted by many cat organisations around the world, but (GCCF)–The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy is not recognized this breed.

Blue or gray water-resistant coat, short hair and orange or copper-coloured eyes is their main identification. They are also popular for their sweet “smile”.  This smiling cat is extremely affectionate. They greet people at the door and follow his family members room to room. Chartreux is a gentle and social cat who easily adjust themselves at any home environment and any pets.

They are very quiet natured cat who rarely makes a sound. Farmers love Chartreux cat because they have an exceptional hunting ability. They have also a good climbing ability. Always try to Keep this curious cats indoors to protect them from vehicles, diseases and other wild animals.
