Siberian cats come from northern Russia. Siberian cat has a beautifully fur coat which not only protect them from the harsh climate but also give them a glamorous appearance. It is a national treasure of Russia. They are popular in fairy tales and children’s book in Russia. Russian families are very fond of Siberian cat and their personality. After the end of the cold war between the Soviet Union and United States, the export business of Siberian cat become very famous worldwide. They are very gentle cat and easily adjustable with family members and other pet.

At first glance, you may think that they are Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat, but their more rounded body and head, large yellow-green eyes, tufted ears, and neck ruff differentiated them. They come in many colors and patterns but brown tabbies are the most popular.

History

Siberian cat is a native cat from the taiga of Siberia which is a forest area with subarctic climate. This cat is very famous in Russia and have been recognized in Russia from about 1000 years. They often refer in Russian folktales and children books. After the end of the cold war between the Soviet Union and the United states they were starting to export worldwide and very soon this exporting business became popular. Many people involved in this business because it was very profitable. In 1990 Siberian cats were first imported in the United states. In 1996 the International cat association first recognized them. American Cat Association also recognized them in 1999, then cat fanciers association accepted it in 2006.

Lifespan

On an average a Siberian cat lifespan is between ( 11 to15 ) years. Although some cats live more than 20 years.

Appearance

It is a medium to large cat. Its chest is large with a neg shaped head. They have semi-long haired coat which is fully water proof. Their ear is round but having some hairs in the ear it looks pointed. There is variation in their eye colors. Their eye comes in gold to green color. Some Siberian cat has blue eyes. They have excellent physical condition. Female are smaller than male. They take at least 5 years to get full maturity.

Coat color and Texture

Siberian cat is famous for its three steps coat. Their coat is consist of guard hairs ( the outer coat), awn hairs ( the middle part of the coat ) and downy (the undercoat). Their hair is shorter is the shoulder and larger in the chest. Siberian cats coat varies from season to season. During winter their coat turns a well upholstered, full and triple which protect them from the harsh climate and during summer their coat turns shorter and less dense. They come in a great variety of color and patterns. They come in black, red, blue, cream, white and brown color. But brown tabbies are the most popular. All color variation is found in color point cat and almost 124 possible color variations are found in their coat.

Temperament

Siberian cats personality is very strong. They are very friendly with their owner, children, and other animals. Siberian cat is very loyal, playful, calm and affectionate. Siberian cat easily makes friends with all the family members. They like the human company but never want excessive attention. The Siberian cat follows the family members around the home and love to sit with you on the sofa or bed. They easily accept other pets than other cats. They are also very popular for their “dog-like” characteristic. This intelligent cat easily learns tricks and after training, they get the ability to open and close the door. This energetic cat loves to play with family members and other pets.

Some kittens are very energetic and playful but some are very serious. Some are very curious about the strangers and some are very shy. Generally guests will find them in an agreeable host. They love people and want their love. Siberian cat want to involve with your every activities. They are a good companion in all works like reading, TV watching etc. Often you will find them to take a nap on a newspaper or keyboard when you reading newspaper or writing on the keyboard. This clam cat never break any things.

Children And Other Pets

Siberian cat is very friendly with the children and other pets. They never have any objection to stay with other pets. They like to play with children and cat friendly dogs. This gentle and loving cat behave good with the children based on their past experiences.

Health

Siberian cats have an outbreak of health problems. This may be genetic in nature. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a problem for a Siberian cat. It is a heart disease which is the result of enlargement of the heart muscle. Some people believe that Siberian cats are hypoallergenic. But it has no scientific document against this issue.

Care

It is necessary to keep its wool clean. For this, at least brush their fur a couple of time in a week. As its coat is water resistance, bath is not necessary for them. Daily dental checkup is necessary. Brush their teeth often to protect them from periodontal disease. Always try to use a vet authorized pet toothpaste.Cut their nail when necessary. Check their ears often. If you find any dirty thing inside their ears then clean it immediately. Corner of the eyes should be wiped with soft and damp cloth. To avoid the infection use separate pieces of cloth for each eye. Monthly veterinary checkup is a good idea to keep them risk free.

Always Keep their litter box clean other wise they start using other places.

Always try to keep them indoor to protect them from other wild animals and diseases. This expensive cat also run the risk of being stolen by someone, so keep them as an indoor-only cat is a wise decision.

For their better growth and health insure proper nutrients. Their house should be kept clean to prevent disease. Low carbohydrate diet, proper care and hygienic environment can help them to survive more time.
